She regretfully denounced them as cruel rumors at the time. Kristin Smart went missing from Cal Poly in 1996. He called his father at 9:47 a.m. on Sunday, May 26, 1996. I remember thinking: If my moms not home Im going to die right here.. Ruben Flores and his estranged wife Susan have always denied any role in Kristin Smart's disappearance. Like the Smart's civil case, theirs also has been on hold. Its not a lie. James Murphy: So why would Susan Flores, her boyfriend, and Ruben Flores be up all night long working under that deck. Smart was last seen with Flores's son Paul. Paul Flores was the last person seen with Kristin Smart before she vanished in 1996. But Margarita says, the police did not seem concerned. Because of the statute of limitations, Dow says, Paul Flores can't be charged with rape. I remember being home watching the news about Kristin Smart and there goes Paul, she recalled. She was looking forward to hearing from Kristin that Sunday. Later, he told detectives that Smart was walking just fine and returned to her dorm while he returned to his dorm. I said, Stop it. Lindsey Smart Stewart: It just amazes me the amount of evidence that's available, yet nothing has happened. After the four students had walked about halfway back to the dorms, Paul Flores told Davis and Anderson, Dont worry I got her, Ill take her from here, according to prosecutors. Chris Lambert: So much was lost in those first few days where if that very first phone call was taken seriously answers might have been uncovered the first week. They were meant for Susan Flores asking her to cooperate with police and have her son come forward. But he entreated each woman who came forward to tell their story to The Daily Beast to reach out to his department. At the time Kristin Smart disappeared, investigators did not immediately search the home. Chris Lambert: Kristin's father would come down and hike every trail he could find on the Central Coast. Chris Lambert: At that point I don't think they had ever dealt with a missing person, a possibly murdered person. Ermelinda Flores' property in Washington state has been searched by investigators in February 2020. Back then, Jane remembered Flores pulling up to her on multiple occasions behind the wheel of a green pickup truck. As they soon learned, she had ended up at a party at an off-campus house. Not at all. Chris Lambert: Paul worked with a number of women that he made incredibly uncomfortable girls who he tried to make a pass at sexually, girls that he tried to force to kiss him. And the body's not there now. Chris Lambert: Kristin became incredibly intoxicated, whether she was drugged or whether she just had a lot to drink in a short amount of time She ends up passed out on the lawn next door. And I was like, "nah, I have to study." Murphy immediately filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Flores in civil court. The detective noticed was Paul was nervous and his heart was beating out of his chest. But soon Flores took his shot with Jane after another drop-off at her moms house. Why? [emotional] I will go outside at nighttime and I'll look up at the full moon and I'll think that that kid's buried somewhere real close. They are aware that they had no eye witnesses, a body was not recovered, there is no physical evidence, and no forensic evidence, Sanger said.
